Store Closed June 25 - June 30
The store will re-open Tuesday June 30.
You may not know, but Beachcombers Bazaar is a family business. It’s just my other half, Asad, and myself. We occasionally have Jazzy (daughter) help out along with additional family and friends that we bribe and beg, lol!
While we are gone, the Orlando store will be closed, and we will still be taking online orders, but shipping will be delayed until we return. Emails will take longer than normal to answer during this time, so please be patient.
If you need a henna tattoo while we are away, I suggest you visit our local henna artist page here...
http://www.shophenna.com/henna_artists.htm.
We have exciting new things happening when we return including 13 pair of brand new khussa shoes!
Thanks for your patience!

Summer Time Henna Tattoos!
Let's talk about henna safety. You may have heard about people with allergic reactions, burns, and/or scars from a henna tattoo. Those are not from pure natural henna. Those misfortunes come from so-called "black henna". Allergies to natural henna are EXTREMELY rare.
Henna is not black!
Do not allow anyone to put henna on you if the stain is going to be black!
The color of natural henna varies and can be a deep burgundy brown, coffee brown, rich maroon-ish, or any shade of orange or brown. The color of your actual henna tattoo will depend on a number of factors including, how fresh the henna is and what it is mixed with, how the skin was prepared before applying the henna, how long the moist henna was in contact with the skin, what part of the body was hennaed, and how the dried henna was removed.
Henna needs to stay on a good while (much longer than an hour) for a deep long lasting stain. The length the stain will stay depends on your body chemistry, how long the henna is left on, if a sealant was used, your body temperature, and how well the henna tattoo is cared for. A typical natural henna tattoo will last 5 days to 3 weeks.
To protect yourself from fake, black "henna" ask your henna artist these questions...
- What color will the henna stain be?
If the answer is black or anything other than what is described above, do not allow that substance to be applied to your body and seep into your bloodsteam. - May I see a list of your ingredients?
Check the list for additives you either don't recognize or that you may be allergic to. - How long does the paste need to stay on the skin.
If the answer is less than a couple of hours, there is likely and additive in the henna that shouldn't be there.
If you are local to Orlando check out list of local Orlando Henna Artists here.
Have fun this summer! Get many henna tattoos! Be SAFE!

Weddings, Henna, and More!
The wedding combined two cultures and traditions and that is always fun! I had a great time doing henna on the bride Thursday evening. Jillian is a bit shy so I did a more subtle design that was not overly large, but still lovely. As tradition dictates, I hid the groom's name in the henna for him to find on the wedding night.

Friday was the Mehndi Party! We got to dress in traditional salwar kameeze and there was great food including my favorite, samosas with mango chutney. The sisters got together to steal the grooms shoes and force him to pay us to return the shoes. This is an old tradition that is always a highlight of the party! The guests took turns applying henna to the hands of both the bride and groom while wishing them luck and blessing them with money. The money collected during this portion of the ceremony is donated to the charity of the couples choice. I'll have to find out what charity they selected.
In order to combine the two cultures and traditions some combining had to be done, so the nikah (Islamic wedding ceremony) was also preformed during the mehndi party.
Saturday was the traditional American wedding ceremony and reception at a lovely hall in Mt Dora. It was beautiful, as you can imagine.
The wedding we had to miss was our friends' Angie and Shaun who got married in a castle in St Augustine and held their reception at the San Sebastian Winery. The pictures are stunning and everyone seemed to have had a great time!
The bride and bridesmaids all wore khussa during the reception! Ange said by the end of the night her corset was killing her, but her feet were in great shape, lol!
The honeymoon is in Hawaii so Angie stopped by for some honeymoon henna before the trip.

Broken Glass Bangle Holders by Wabisabi Designs
Local Orlando artist and dancer, Violet of Wabisabi Designs, created these fantastic tea light holders using Beachcombers’ broken glass bangles. Each holder takes nearly 3 hours of painstaking handwork to complete. The perfect size and color of bangle pieces are pieced together like an artistic jigsaw puzzle to create a head-turning piece of useable art.
Don’t limit yourself to using this beautiful piece just for candles. They are too pretty to be useful for only one purpose!
- pen or pencil cup
- small vase
- incense burner
- makeup brushes
- straw or utensil holder for parties

Shop Local Orlando!
The Florida Retail Federation has launched a campaign to encourage Floridians to shop locally, and Erik von Ancken dropped by the store for a quick interview and to film some footage of a local business. Erik heard about us from Elissa who teaches Dance Trance (how fun is that!) at the You Health Center.
The basics of the "shop local campaign" is that we, as consumers, should try to find what we need in our own communities before reaching out further, thus supporting local business and keeping their doors open. The FRF is hoping to keep more spending and tax dollars in Florida to help the state weather the financial crunch.
As both a local brick and mortar business and an online business we have a unique perspective on this.
As a small family business with a single physical store in College Park Orlando, I can certainly relate to the importance of this. Shopping local, especially smaller businesses, keeps the community and charm of an area alive. Target and Don Pablos are great, but let's not forget Bijou's Boutique and Paxia (let's all support Paxia, they have the best guacamole ever!). Smaller businesses often don't have the massive amounts of cash and credit to weather tougher economical times, that larger chains and corporations do. No one wants to see empty storefronts.
As the owner of an internet business, I still understand this local push. We work with local businesses on a somewhat larger scale. Instead of working with big factories in India and Pakistan, we work with small family businesses. The business we give them, directly impacts their local communities. We may sell worldwide, but we like to think of both our suppliers and our customers as part of our own little Beachcombers community. We've even had customers from all over the country include a visit to our store as a part of their Florida vacation plans!
Back to the filming itself...
The shoot was loads of fun and I think it showed off the store wonderfully. Thanks Erik and Scott!
We were lucky enough to have a couple of local customers drop in while walking their dogs. Thanks for being on camera with us ladies!
I was super excited to see a close up of Susan's Eyegams Mineral Pigments, and I loved all the great shots of our neighbors, Forever Young Floral Designs, Top Drawer, David's World Cycle, and Blades Salon.
Just wanted to share that bit of our excitement with you! I hope to see you at our local store, Beachcombers Bazaar, but if that's not convenient for you, visit us online at our website, www.ShopBeachcombers.com.

Lake Eola Downtown Art & Living Expo
This was Beachcombers Bazaar's third year at the Orlando festival and it was hoppin' as usual. We saw many clients from previous years and got to let them know about our new Store in College Park, Orlando.
We created our own little "Karma Row" with the YOU Health Center to our left and World Henna (Zulay) and The Henna Studio (Ena) to our right. To the left of the YOU Health Center, we discovered a new friend, Jeanette of Missing Pieces who was offering those super cool little folding purse hangers. I bought two purse hangers! One for me and one for my mom.
A Magi Belly Dance provided belly dancing fun both days and had an energetic booth near the stage where Susan had her Eyegasm Mineral Powders available!
Looking forward to next year! See you there!

Ena of The Henna Studio at Beachcombers Bazaar
She did a lovely medallion on the right foot which looked great next to bright pink pedicured toes with a little gold toe ring.
I was lucky enough to have Ena give me a great Valentine henna design on my RIGHT hand. You henna artists out there will appreciate how nice it is to have someone do henna on the hand that you use to draw henna. That hand is always naked!Good news! You can look forward to Saturday henna mehndi appointments here at Beachcombers Bazaar starting in March with Ena and other henna artists on occasion.
Here's to much more henna at Beachcombers Bazaar!

Goodbye & Good Luck, Mariko!
The beautiful state of Vermont is about to inherit a rich henna tradition in both talent and energy. I know that Mariko will do well in Vermont, and she'll have a wonderful time bringing henna body art to an area that doesn't have as much henna as we are used to here in Florida.
We'll all have to gather our positive energy and send it Mariko's way to help ensure her easy transition and success. Expanding the scope of henna and the blessings, good feelings, and artistic expressions henna conjures is a great thing. We now have a thread that extends all the way up the East Coast connecting us all and binding us closer as henna lovers.
Luckily, Mariko has many friends and family here in Orlando, so she will be back for visits! We will be sure to make time for Mariko when she is in town for some henna tattoos!
Orlando has a wonderful selection of talented henna artists, but Mariko is still leaving some big shoes to fill. If you are considering sharing your henna art with others, now is the time! Henna is a good thing for everyone and we all need more good things in our life!
Join me in wishing Mariko the very best of luck and sending our love to her!
Good Luck, Mariko!
Much love,
Jody

New Batik Art on Silk by Shalini Tandon
What is batik?
Batik is an ancient art technique that uses hot wax as a resist for dyes on fabric or paper. Basic batik is very straight forward and simple, but advanced multi-colored and multi-layered batik is very complex and time consuming. A single piece of multi-colored batik work can take months to create.
"A true art form should encourage the viewer to participate in its creation. Through the use of imagination the viewer should be allowed to create a story that underlies the visual interpretation, and the art should communicate with the view, thus the view becomes part of the creation. Batik is such an art form."Shalini's art captures elements of people and their natural surroundings to create a visual story with fluid images. She uses only silk fabric for her batik art, and often seeks out antique sari fabric with a story and history attached to the fabric. Indian women, such as her Great-Grandmother, have contributed sari fabric from special moments in their lives for some of Shalini's pieces.
-Shalini Tandon
At Beachcombers Bazaar, we offer a selection of Sahlini's silk batik scarves, silk batik pillows, and framed silk batik art. This is art to be experienced, so stop in and bring a friend! I am happy to create custom matching glass bangle sets for the batik silk scarves to make the perfect Valentine's gift.

Eyegasms Mineral Pigments: Loose Colored Powders
Eyegasms Mica Powders are created by local Orlando artist/belly dancer Susan (Bathsheba). Having sensitive skin and loving make-up lead Susan to find natural mineral pigments for herself, but she found the major sources for these (Bare Essentials and other such companies) did not have the bright fun colors she was looking for. Lucky for us, she decided to make her own!
Susan's Mineral Pigments are in fun colors like...
- Gator Tail: A glittering dark green with a mysterious metallic look
- Ruby Slippers: A gorgeous warm red with plenty of sparkle, of course!
- Elvin Magick: Brilliant spring green that looks soooo cool on
- Cabaret: Bright pink powder with a "shimmying" shimmer
- ...and so many more
Use Eyegasms colored mineral pigments for...
- Eye Shadow
- Gilding Paste for henna (especially wedding & bridal mehndi)
- Stamp Art (embossing powder)
- Coloring Candles and Soaps
- Mix with acrylic to make paints for crafts
- Painting Jewelry
- and more!
Visit our store in College Park Orlando, Beachcombers Bazaar, for a current selection of Eyegasms loose powder colors. We do not offer Eyegasms mineral pigments on our website at this time, but you can shop online directly with Susan at www.Eyegasms.net.
Eyegasms...Give yourself one!
Color Up!

Holiday On the Drive Fun!
Congratulations, Jennifer (of College Park, Orlando) and Pamela (of Winter Park, Orlando)!
Jennifer and Pamela each won a Beachcombers Bazaar gift bag worth $50! Yeaaaaa!
Beachcombers Bazaar was proud to bring a variety of entertainment and activities to Holiday On the Drive 2008 including...
Tribal Dance Performances with Florida Tribal Dance
The stars of the evening were definitely the Florida Tribal Dancers. Both professional troupes (Blue Caravan and Black V) performed on the Beachcombers stage along with some of the advanced students of Florida Tribal Dance and the children's troupe. FTD director, Lacey Sanchez, dazzled us as always!
I cannot thank Lacey and all the beautiful dancers enough for the wonderful performances. I am delighted that we are able to work so closely with FTD and bring tribal dance to College Park as often as we can!
For those of you that caught either show, and are interested in learning tribal belly dance, the Florida Tribal Dance class schedule can be found here. Come as you are! Believe me, if I can do it, so can you!
Another special thanks to all the dancers for supporting us at Beachcombers Bazaar. I saw glass bangles, khussa shoes, and Beachcombers bindi body stickers everywhere!
You can see some videos of the performance here.
Henna Body Art with Mariko of Henna of Soul
A wonderful sweet henna artist that I send my thanks to! Mariko did a wonderful job and was packed during the entire event. Mariko always adds a positive sharing energy to any event and it was a delight to have her!
$1 a Minute Massage with Diane of the YOU Health Center
Diane has the fingers of a Goddess! Her massage table was occupied all night long with shoppers getting energized for the season.
Our neighbors joined the festivities with fun stuff too.
Forever Young Floral Design (the BEST in Orlando) had a large table full of holiday greenery including wreaths, swags, and more at bargain prices. I saw people leaving with boxes of greenery!
Blades Hair Salon had a wonderful food spread and some amazing carolers. Not to mention the folks at Blades are just fun to be around.
Discounted shopping, free performances, old friends, and new friends...what a night! A special thanks to Ena of The Henna Studio for stopping by to bring some mylar she found that is perfect for making henna cones!
Support local small business! Shop local this holiday season! Visit us for our glass bangles (only 9.99), khussa shoes, beaded flats, henna tattoo products, mehndi kits, bindi body stickers, and new items from local artists including Karma Scarves by Celia and Eyegasms Mineral Pigments by Susan. Stocking Stuffer Ideas for Her!
Bindi Body Stickers
Ahhh... What a fantastic stocking stuffer, lightwieght, inexpensive, you can pack a ton of them in even the smallest stocking, brightly colored, completely unique, and she can wear them right away! She will not be getting a duplicate of this gift!
Choose a small grouping of bindi styles for more impact. One or two large fancy bindi (maybe a belly bindi or arm band bindi tattoo) and a few packs of small bindi styles that can be mixed and matched with the larger bindi are a great combination. Bindi start at only $2.99!
Yes, I really said glass! Our glass bangle sets contain 13-30 bangles and most are only $9.99. Select her favorite colors or go with holiday colors for a can't miss gift. If you don't know her size, try the 2.10 M/L. More than half of my customers are this popular size.
Local Orlando Holiday Shopping
If you are local and can stop by our shop, we have some great store only items to select from.
Tiny handmade lac pill boxes are great for stockings. Place a piece of candy or a ring in the boxes for an extra treat!
Hand knitted Karma Scarves by Celia are brightly colored, warm, fuzzy, and packed with good vibes. You can match bindi and bangles to the Karma scarves for a total package stocking.
Don't get the same old same old this year to fill her stocking. Be unique! Be noticed!
