Coolest customers, EVER!

I opened for a a private shopping appointment for a long time customer, Shaida from Gainsville, on Monday. Shaida brought her husband, Peter, his sister Karina, and their friend Darci. Oh my what fun was had!

First Shaida brought me a gorgeous long hippie dress with matching earrings as a gift! How incredibly sweet, right? Totally unexpected, but much appreciated!

We were all in bangle heaven as we matched vacation clothes and swimsuits (they were on their way to Puerto Rico!). OK, Peter was not in bangle heaven with us, but he was happy to see them happy.

Don't feel too bad for Peter. He was the first to get henna! We did the coolest henna on him. We did a Maori tattoo style which was the first I've ever done. In fact I didn't even know what it was until he told me about it. To describe a Maori tattoo (Ta Moko), think of a tribal tattoo but instead of solid black the tattoo is filled with patterns.

Though beautiful, these have deep cultural meaning as well. We didn't have the time to research meanings and we were doing henna instead of a permanent tattoo so we focused on the artistic side of the Maori tattoo style.

Next came Shaida. A sea turtle and hibiscus were her requests! Her henna tattoo is island fun!

For Karina we did a beautiful floral back design that works well with her swimsuit.

After the henna and shopping we grabbed burgers at Graffiti Junction which is a block away.

What a fun day! Thank you all for such a great time!

Yikes! Been Awhile!

Florida Tribal Dance Fundraiser After Word

What a GREAT event! The Florida Tribal Dance fundraiser was a huge success!

It was crazy fun and I did a boatload of henna earning nearly $300 for the cause!

Vacation Henna!

You may know that we just returned from vacation. I certainly didn't take vacation from henna! This is a picture of me on Atlantic Ave in South Beach. While waiting for our food, I broke out some henna and hennaed away!

Jewelry style henna for vacation. It was a quick easy style, but had plenty of impact and left a lovely stain.

March is the start of henna tattoo season, so it's time to get wound up and ready for spring and summer henna!

Bright Colored Spring Indian Shoes!

Just got a small order of bright colored khussa for spring!

There is a spectacular bright orange with iridescent beading. These are in the same beading style as our current magenta khussa shoes. The coolest style ever!

A lovely dark navy that looks beautiful paired with bright colors or neutral colors. A nice way to get away from plain black as a basic.

Spring would not be complete without a nice bright fuchsia, cerise!

Teal is BACK! I've been getting some requests for this one, so snap them up if they are on your list. They will sell quickly!

Now I LOVE what I do. I really really love running Beachcombers Bazaar, but by Goodness, I need a vacation!

Since we used our winter holiday to organize and inventory new product, we are taking a vacation! That's right, a REAL non-working vacation that we haven't had in years and years!

We are very lucky here in Florida with our gorgeous warm weather.

Henna Art On Objects (Wood, Canvas, Candles...)

I have recently started doing henna on objects other than people. SUPER FUN!

I'm still very new to this, but I want to share what I've learned so far.

When you henna objects, you have the choice of leaving the henna paste on or scraping the henna away and using the henna stain as your art. just like you do on the skin.

When you want to leave the henna in place such as the Unity Candle and the Canvas I hennaed, I've found my traditional Beachcombers Favorite Henna Recipe works well. If the henna will stay on the item, it's important to not have too much cracking and for the henna to adhere well. The sugar in the Beachcombers Favorite Henna Recipe helps with this.

Henna Unity Candle

Here is a blog post I created after completing the henna Unity Candle.

You will also need to use a sealer of some sort or the henna will scrape away. For the candle I wanted to use Candle Kote or Candle Luster, but I couldn't get them in time for the wedding. You can also use a dip style candle sealer, but upon reading reviews I found it can be a bit tricky and I didn't have time for experimentation.

I ended up using a clear acrylic based sealer (don't use lacquer sealers as they can be flammable, even when dry). I sprayed five thin coats after the henna was completely dry, letting the sealer dry in between coats.

I think Modge Podge may work beautifully as well, so I may try that next time.

Henna Canvas Painting

This was a gift for my mom for Christmas. I just got a standard canvas that was already stretched on a frame and painted a background it with basic acrylic paint. I let that dry completely and then used the Beachcombers Favorite Recipe Henna to free-hand a henna design over the surface.

Like the candle I let the henna dry completely and applied a clear acrylic sealer of the entire canvas in light even coats. As I recall I did about 8 thin layers of sealer because I had to ship it from Orlando to my mom in Ohio.

Henna Wood Box

This was a small balsa wood box I got for my Grandmother for Christmas and I hennaed it up! I decided that I was going to remove the henna instead of leaving the paste on the box.

I used my normal Beachcombers Favorite henna mix, but the next time I henna something with the intention of removing the henna, I will mix henna without any sugar in it so that it comes off easier. Applying dry heat helped to remove the henna.

I let the henna paste sit on the box for a bout a week then I removed the henna the day before I saw my Grandmother. The stain was a nice warm brown. The next day, I noticed the henna had already darkened slightly. I expect it will continue to darken over time just like a stain on the skin. I'll get some pictures the next time I see the box to compare.

So there it is! My experience with hennaing objects so far! I plan do do a ton of other fun things with henna throughout the year, so I'll post more ideas and tips as I learn. I hope I'll hear from those more experienced than I, so that I can avoid mistakes or "learning opportunities" as I like to call them.

What a fun henna class!

Saturday was our winter henna workshop and, oh my, what fun!

It was the first time in a long time the class did not sell out. I had 6 students in the class. Tons of individual attention and plenty of jokes and laughter. Perhaps I should further limit the size of the henna workshops to eight.

I think I've imparted some serious henna addiction to these students!

300,000 New Glass Bangles

Whew! Our glass bangles came in just before Christmas and I am slowly but surely making a dent in organizing and cataloging them. That's 1500 boxes of bangles that need to be sized, separated, cataloged, shelved, and inventoried.

I hope to have them done by the end of February.

NEW Khussa Indian Shoes!!!!!!

Woo Hoo! Our new Indian khussa are FINALLY here! I understand the delay due to floods, but I'm so glad to have them!

There are some beautiful styles including a gorgeous magenta khussa. Not quite purple, not quite fuchsia...it's GORGEOUS!

I am also excited to have brought back a denim style khussa with awesome lime green beading and bright pink yarn work.

For all you brides, I have a nice selection of warm white/ivory and cool white khussa flats. There is a brand new style that I am excited to have, cool white with light blue beading. Perfect for your "something blue"!

I hope you feel they were worth the wait!

Henna is relaxing and energizing at the same time. You can't help but feel good when you are doing henna or getting henna done.

As a creative outlet, henna can be used in a million different ways. Body art (of course!); on candles; silk and other fabrics; on wooden items including picture frames, boxes, and more; canvas; or even paper.

Henna is a great way to bond and relate with others. Your partner, your friends, family, and even friends-to-be.

So, do more henna! Henna-fy your 2011!

Bajidoo Holiday Ornaments

I was lucky enough to have a short visit from Brenda of Bajidoo, just before Christmas. What a treat!

One evening I had my own little arts & crafts lesson from Brenda. She shared with me some of her charcoal drawing techniques, which is an art medium I've never used before. We used water color pencils. We painted and tried out a new dimensional paint!

Using some of Bajidoo's ultra cool decals we made these cool holiday ornaments...

We also decorated a wood bangle box with Bajidoo's fab Steam Punk design.

So beautiful and I can't believe how easy and quick it was to make such gorgeous things!

"Baby, It's Cold Outside!" says your henna

Baby it's cold outside!

Henna can be picky about temperature and winter is a different set of challenges than summer.

In summer, we have to be careful that we don't "cook" our henna. We have to keep it out of sunlight and not let it get too warm. When mixing henna powder in the summer dye release is often much quicker (often a just a few hours will yield good dye release). This also means that the henna paste can lose it's dying abilities quickly, so you need to keep your henna cool.

Mixing Henna in the Cold

In the winter (even here in Florida) we have to be more patient with our henna. The same henna that would obtain full dye release in a few hours can take a full day or more in a cooler environment. I find that if my house is less than 70 degrees I need to let my Jamila henna powder mix sit 48 hours or more. I do this in stages. I mix my powder with my liquid (lemon, tea mix, or whatever I am using that day) and let it sit overnight. The next morning I add sugar, essential oils, and any additional liquid if needed. I let that sit again overnight and the next day I put the henna in applicators and cones for freezing. Sometimes I don't freeze the cones until the next day, giving the henna a full 3 days to sit.

Applying Henna in the Cold

I am always cold, so I have to work extra hard to get a good stain in the winter. I get all my supplies together along with a candle, blanket, and cup of hot tea or glass of wine. I do my henna while I am all wrapped up in my blanket and seal it with lemon sugar. When my hands (or feet) get cold, I hold them over the candle.

Here in the store, if it is too cold, I have clients sit beside a space heater to make sure they stay warm while we apply their henna.

Another great way to raise your body temperature for good henna color is to do a traditional henna wrap. After your henna has set, seal it with lemon sugar. Try doing 2 or 3 thin coats of sealer. Once the sealer is completely dry, wrap the henna in bathroom paper. This will absorb sweat. Be sure to wrap a couple of layers. Wrap your mummified henna in plastic wrap. This will seal in your body heat. I often follow up with a sock or other piece of clothing over the plastic wrap so the wrap doesn't stick to everything around it.

This winter, keep temperature in mind while mixing and applying your henna. Remember, body temperature is nearly 99 degrees. Even 70 degrees is a significant difference in temperature.

A fellow Floridain henna artist, Michael, gave me this tip to share...

"I have this thing called a "ThermiPaq"... basically it's a sand bag that you use for sore muscles and you can heat in the microwave or put in the freezer. I heated mine up for about 1.5 minutes and put that in the bottom of a cooler. I then covered it with a small towel and then laid my bottles of henna on top. This way, the henna was gently heated overnight even though the house was cold. I did that for 2 nights and the henna started turning a dark green/brownish color. I tried it after that and it works wonderfully."

Organic Earrings for Normally Pireced Ears

Woo Hoo! They have arrived, and they are GORGEOUS!

Our newest products are these fab new tribal earrings, Beachcombers Organics. They are handmade in Bali of wood, horn, bone, and Mother-Of-Pearl.

Stretched lobes and gauged ears not needed! These cool tribal earrings are for normally pierced ears.

We have split expander styles that look like they've been threaded right through your ear hole. These are known as cheaters or fakers.

Fatastic that you don't have to lose all your jewelry as you move up in gauge sizes, yes?

See! They look like real expanders when they are worn!

We also have these cool organic pin style earrings. These use a horn or wood stick for the earring post.

How did we move from Indian shoes, glass bangles, and henna to organic earrings?
Glad you asked! A little while back a good friend was dealing with some health issues. To help in her healing process I did quite a bit of healing henna tattoos for her. As a thank you gift, she gave me the coolest earrings I had ever seen!

That's them in the picture...

I wore them EVERY day until she bought me another pair for my birthday. Then I started swapping out my fabulous organic earrings.

I got so many compliments on them, that I thought I had better start sharing the wealth (not to mention keep myself in good supply!). Our tag line for Beachcombers Bazaar is "Be Noticed..." These earrings certainly fit the bill! I started looking around for a good family source for the earrings.

That's when I found Wayan. What an amazing person! He and his wife started a small art business in Bali in the 80's focusing on his lifelong passion of carving and wood sculpting. These hand carved earrings are now part of his art. That little business is continuing to grow as new family members and other artists from the community are added.

Like most Indonesians, the environment and natural resources are important to Wayan. All materials used are harvested responsibly. Wood is from renewable tree farms planted specifically for the purpose. Horn and bone are left over material from farm animals and animals are never killed for their horn or bone. Indonesians (much like native Americans) try to use every part of an animal or plant and waste very little.

Henna Candles

I was asked a couple of days ago to henna a Unity candle for a fantastic couple I had done some pre-wedding henna on a couple of weeks ago. Amy and Robyn, you are AWESOME!

I have never hennaed a candle before, so this required some research.

I am certainly no expert so take this advice with a grain of salt and please post any comments, suggestions, or corrections you may have.

I was given a standard white pillar candle. Since I have never applied henna to a candle before, we decided that I would first draw the design with a Sharpie so that if the henna flaked off in the future, the couple could re-henna by tracing the Sharpie drawing.

You have to be quite careful about where you can touch without smearing your henna. Takes a little getting used to, but not so bad.

The issue is how to avoid having the henna flake off the candle. Upon doing research I found two main ways to do this. Applying a spray candle gloss such as Candle Kote or Candle Luster, or dipping the candle in a candle sealer.

Having never made candles before or dipped candles in wax, I opted to not try it for my first attempt with one one day to figure it out and get it done. The gloss sprays were not available at local craft store and we didn't have time to order it online, so a clear hard-coat acrylic spray is what we decided to use.

I sprayed 5 very light coats of the spray over the entire candle after the henna was completely dry. Super easy and the henna seem fairly strong on the candle...for now. I don't think the clear acrylic will be a good long term solution.

The next time, I will use one of the other sealing methods. You know, Modge Podge may work as well. Hmmm...

I toyed with the idea of not using henna, but I love the energy of henna and felt is was more important to have the positive energy part of the wedding than a perfect candle.

I won't have time to henna more candles anytime soon, but I plan on learning the ins and outs of this when I do have time. I will, of course, share!

Life of a Henna Tattoo: Good and Bad

I just finished a beginning henna workshop and what a GREAT class! I had an amazing group of women!

Two of the women in class are regular henna customers of mine and allowed me to demonstrate an important fact about henna color. Two days before I gave both Stacy and Shanon henna tattoos. Stacy didn't put any lotion on that day so I hennaed her without cleaning the area first. I used witch hazel to clean Stacy's skin since she had lotion.

Stacy's henna was brilliantly dark and lovely. Shanon's was rather lack-luster. The exact same henna, the exact same day, and both designs done on the foot and ankle area.

I constantly tout that henna takes best on clean dry skin. A quick cleaning can't remove all lotion since lotion seeps into the skin cells, but it's better than nothing. Clean open cells allow a better bond with henna. Think of your skin cells as a glass. If part of the glass is filled with lotion (or water or anything else), not as much henna can fit in the glass.

For the best possible henna tattoo stain, you need clean dry skin!

Another thing brought up was how the henna tattoo stain on my hand was so dark. The full answer to that is here http://shophenna.com/new_henna_tips.htm, but though my henna was very dark, it wasn't going to be a long lasting stain. I only left my henna on for less than 2 hours, just long enough to do the design and finish a movie I was watching.

Though I still got nice dark color from my henna it started fading MUCH quicker than normal. By the 4th or 5th day the henna was starting to fade. Granted I was also in the process of installing drywall and mudding and sanding the drywall. This meant plenty of hand scrubbing through out the day. Typically I can expect at least a week of nice deep color from my henna.

Henna stain 7 days old after poor care and not leaving the paste on the skin very long.

The lesson from this? Take good care of your henna for a lasting stain. Leave it on for 4 hours or more and avoid any type of exfoliation.

Light Scarring from Henna Mixed with Chemicals

I had a customer come in a couple of days ago who had some light scarring from chemical laced henna she had gotten while on vacation, TEN MONTHS ago! Though I called this light scarring, I don't think she considers the scarring light.

The henna that produced these scars 10 months after application was mixed with benzene, kerosene, or gasoline.

She said the henna had a painful burning sensation while it was on the skin. It left a nice deep brown color even though she only left it on for a half hour or so because of the burning.

Henna should not burn. It may feel a little itchy on the skin because as it dries it shrinks. It may make your skin feel cold, but natural henna will NOT burn.

Henna should have a natural scent and you will likely smell the essential oils mixed in the henna.

It should NOT smell like chemicals.
It should NOT burn.
Any artist worth getting henna from, WILL be able to tell you the ingredients in their henna paste.

Be Smart! Be Safe!

There aren't as may warnings or pictures of damage from henna with additives like benzene, kerosene, and gasoline as there are for black henna. The real danger with these additives is that they are carcinogens (cancer causing and cancer spreading agents), and they build up in your blood stream and liver. They don't just go away when your henna tattoo goes away.

The fact that they can leave a color similar to natural henna is tricky. Look for tip-offs such as only needing to leave the henna on for a short period of time, really long lasting henna, or an artist being vague about the ingredients in their henna.

Karwa Chuth Indian Celebration

This traditional Indian holiday is a yearly celebration that honors husbands and god-sisters of Indian women.

The celebration has changed over the years, but I love the original meaning behind the holiday. Karwa Chuth orginally celebrated the relationship between women bonded during a traditional male and female marriage ceremony. Let me explain...

Many years ago before telephones, cars, and trains, when Indian women married, they went to live with their new husband and their in-laws. This often meant leaving their friends and family far behind, leaving the girl without a confidant to talk to and help work out issues with her new family. To ease this transition, during the marriage ceremony another bond was sanctified between the bride and another women who would become the bride's life long god-sister or god-friend.

The ceremony during the wedding bonds the women as sisters and best friends, giving the new bride a means to have someone close to confide her worries and hopes in privacy and confidence. Karwa Chuth originally was a celebration of this relationship between women and the marriage that brought them together. They would exchange gifts of food, glass bangles, henna, and bindi body stickers, and enjoy each other's company. They would celbrate the marraige of the husband and wife as what brought the women together as god-sisters.

The bride's in-laws would also give her gifts (glass bangles being a must) on this day to celebrate the good fortune of having a kind and loving daughter-in-law, and to show how much they love her.

As the necessity of god-sisters has waned, the Karwa Chuth celebration has gravitated more towards celebrating the well-being, prosperity, and longevity of a woman's husband. A day long fast, from sun up to sun down, and prayer accompany the tradition of gifts.

The fast comes from the Story of Queen Veeravati who both accidentally cursed and revived her husband with the help of Goddess Parvati.

Karwa Chuth 2010 is October 26, so celebrate the special women in your life!

Sketchbook Project 2011

Have you heard of this? It's the coolest thing ever!

The Art House Co-Op offers this interactive art exhibit and ANYONE can be a part of it! Even me! That's right, I've signed up to be part of the Sketchbook Project 2011.

So what exact is it, you want to know?

It's like a concert tour but with sketchbooks.

Here's how it works. You purchase a blank sketchbook (by October 31st) and fill it with ANYTHING you want; drawings, paintings, stories, pictures, collages, stickers, ANYTHING! You sent it back to the Art House Co-Op (by January 15th) and then in March 2011, the tour of 6 American cities begins that includes ALL of the Sketchbooks on display!

After the tour is over all the sketchbooks become part of the permanent display at the Brooklyn Art Library.

The really cool thing (as if this isn't cool enough) is you can track your sketchbook through the entire process. You can see how many people have looked at your specific book.

Positive Henna Energy

I know many people do not believe in the power of henna energy. I am here to tell you it exists and is powerful!

Healing Henna

This henna design uses sprouts for growth and life, peacocks for luck and blessings, open style flowers to accept and attract positive energies.

When I create a henna design on someone I try to work with their energy to create a design especially suited to them. When possible, I try to attract the kind of energy that they currently need in their lives. Diane of the YOU Health Center here in Orlando coined my henna, "Henna with Intention", and I think that's perfect!

Violet's Beautiful Soul Henna

Violet is one of my favorite people to henna. She is simply the best canvas! Every design comes out gorgeous on her!

Sometimes that energy needed is healing either physically or emotionally. Other times someone needs the courage to make a change or to take on new challenges in their lives. Sometimes a woman wants to have a baby and needs fertility henna. It doesn't matter the reason for the henna, the point is henna can be part of creating your own reality!

Every design I do on Celia is different! She is just layers and layers of energy goodness!

You can feel the positive energy flowing when henna is being done! As long as you have color, you should still be able to reconnect with that great henna energy.

Eid Mehndi: Henna Tattoos for Eid

New clothes, check. New jewelry, check. Have you thought about your Eid Henna yet?

You can't allow Eid to pass without henna on your hands! You can do your Eid henna yourself, get together with friends and do henna on each other, or you can have henna applied professionally.

Eid mehndi is best done on the palms of the hands, but you can have your henna applied wherever you'd like.

For the best possible color on Eid morning, your henna should be done on the 7th or the 8th at the latest. Your henna tattoo needs time to cure and oxidize for full color. Even Monday the 6th is a good day to have your henna done for Eid.

If you plan on doing henna yourself, Friday September 3 is the last day to order henna from Beachcombers Bazaar for priority shipping.

Geting Dark Color Tattoos from Henna

Everyone seems to want super dark color from their henna tattoos. I want to help you achieve this, but keep in mind henna isn't all about color. It's about connecting (with others or just yourself) and contributing to a positive energy within and around us. Henna can be as powerful as you let it!

Back to dark color henna! There are so many factors that contribute to the color you ultimately get from your henna, we're going to address most of them.

The Henna Product Itself
Mixing your own henna from powder is capable of giving you the the darkest longest lasting color. I suggest Jamila professional body art quality henna and the Beachcombers Favorite recipe. Here is a rundown of the recipe I personally use...

Mix Jamila henna powder and lemon juice in a glass bowl. I use lemon juice from the bottle, not fresh lemons. I find I get more consistent results that way and I don't have to worry about clogging. I don't mix exact amounts of henna powder and lemon juice, instead I go for a specific consistency. I add lemon juice until the paste resembles thick mashed potatoes. If you need a general reference for how much lemon juice to add start with approximately equal amounts of each. Reserve a tiny bit of powder in case you need it later to thicken your mix.

The acid in the lemon juice helps release the dye in the henna (lawsone).
I place plastic wrap over the henna paste and press it down so it is actually touch the paste. I place the bowl in a warm (but not too warm) dry place overnight.
The next morning, I can see that I've had some dye release. If you are looking at the side of the glass bowl you will see a darker brown ring around the top of the henna. If you take a spoon and scrape a layer of the top henna off you will see a nice brown top layer with fresh green henna paste below.

I add regular white table sugar to the henna and mix it in. I use about 1 part sugar to about 4 parts henna. You will find the sugar melts in the henna as you mix it in smoothing out your henna and adding "liquid".

The sugar makes the henna stay wet against the skin longer and stick to the skin better, thus helping you achieve a darker stain.
I add equal amounts of lavender oil and tea tree oil. Everyone uses a different amount of oil. I use about 25-35 drops of each oil for one box (100 grams) of Jamila henna powder.

Both lavender and tea tree oils have monoterpene alcohols which will help release more of the lawsone dye in your henna resulting in a darker stain. You can get a great combo pack of Jamila henna powder, lavender oil, and tea tree oil here.
I put the same plastic wrap over the henna and let it sit until either later that day or even the next day. I mix it up again and my henna is ready to use!

Here's a couple of additional convenience tips for you...

This is a good point for your to strain your henna if you like.
Put your henna in individual sized cones and then freeze them. Anytime you need fresh henna, you are an hour of thawing away from fresh individual sized cones away!

What Part of the Body you Henna

Henna takes best on the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. The further away from the feet and hands you get, the lighter the stain. The thinner the skin, the few layers of skin cells there are for the henna to stain. That's ok, you can still do henna on the back or even the face, just know that it will be lighter and not last as long.

The Skin Itself
Henna takes best to clean dry skin. Lotions, sunblock or even water will be a barrier between the henna and the skin. The more base (opposite of acidic) your skin is the darker your henna stain.

How Long You Leave the Moist Henna in Contact with the Skin
The longer you leave the wet henna paste in contact with the skin, the darker and longer lasting the color. Ideally I like to see people shoot for 4-6 hours. Overnight is even better!

Use a sealer such as a lemon sugar sealer. This will help you develop a nice crust on top of the henna while keeping the underside (that's in contact with your skin) of the henna moist.

How Warm You are With the Paste on the Skin
The warmer your skin the darker your henna stain. I have low blood pressure and I'm always cold. It's much harder for me to get good henna color than it is for most people. Don't crank your air conditioning, and try to keep your body temperature up. Sit in the sun, have a glass of wine or hot tea, wrap up in a blanket if you are like me, lol!

The best thing you can do to keep the henna area warm is to seal and wrap your henna design. Dab on a lemon sugar solution to the henna as soon as it's dry enough to touch. Wrap the design in plenty of toilet paper to absorb sweat and then wrap Saran Wrap around the toilet paper. This can yield crazy-good color!

How You Remove the Henna Paste

Don't use water to remove the henna from your skin. Either gently scrape it off with your fingers or a spatula or use a little olive oil or mehndi oil to remove the henna paste. I suggest avoiding water on the henna for the rest of the day if possible.

How Well You Care For the Henna Tattoo
Henna is a permanent stain. It doesn't fade away, your skin cells exfoliate off. Anything you do to avoid exfoliating the skin where your henna is will help your henna last longer. Avoid water, cleaners, and anything else that may exfoliate the skin as much as possible (within good hygiene limits).

So you have your henna, but now you don't know what designs to henna? No problem! Henna is all about building your henna vocabulary so that you can free-hand henna easily, straight from your heart (or head as the case may be).

It helps to start by imitating different designs you encounter.
You can find design ideas everywhere!

The Henna Design Gallery section of our henna help site has HUNDREDS of henna design pictures! Copy away! Get inspired!
Our FaceBook Page has a ton of henna design pictures too. While on FaceBook make friends with other henna artists.
Purchase henna design books. Currently we stock the Beachcombers henna design book (comes with every henna kit), but there are others out there. Look around and find them.
Check out Google Images for ideas. Looking for a butterfly? Google butterfly and take a look at the images. You'll get a ton of ideas this way!
Get inspired by everyday items around you. Jewelry, bedding, clothing, candle holders...you get the idea.

* Keep in mind if you are using another artist's work you need to give them credit. If you want to post, print, or otherwise publish work from another henna artist, you need to get permission from that henna artist.
With some practice you will find that you start pairing henna elements on your own. Before long you will have developed your own unique henna style!

Remember to take pictures of your work when you can. You'll be able to see how much better you are getting and you'll remember different designs you've done in the past.

Building your henna vocabulary is a huge help if you like to do one-of-a-kind henna or if you like to connect with the energies people project. Once you are no longer worried about the actual art, you can really connect with people on a personal level. You'll be shocked at how unique and personal some of the designs end up.

Preventing Clogged Henna Applicator Tips

I had a customer ask me for tips on preventing clogs in her applicator bottles and I'm always happy to share henna tips and tricks. I thought I'd share some thoughts and ideas with everyone!

Straining Henna Paste
Straining your henna is the biggest thing you can do to prevent clumps and henna debris from clogging your applicator tips. Here are instructions for how to strain your henna. Straining is done after your henna is completely mixed and dye release has occurred. It's the last thing you do before putting your henna in applicators.

Sifting Henna Powder
You can also sift your henna powder, which is done before you mix the powder into a paste. I HATE sifting henna, and if you are going to strain your henna paste, there is no need to sift the henna powder.

Use Jamila Henna Powder
When I use standard henna powder I always strain my henna. When I use Jamila henna powder I strain about half the time. The Jamila henna is so fine and well sifted that straining isn't required. I still do it sometimes because if makes it so easy to get into my carrot bag and let's me feel like I'm doing all I can do, lol! Honestly, I don't see any difference when I do strain it, so don't feel you must strain Jamila henna.

Professional Moroccan Applicator Tips
Using the polished stainless steel Moroccan applicator tips helps prevent clogs as well. Unlike Jaq tips and standard Moroccan tips (the ones with the plastic base), they are polished on the inside. Makes your henna flow beautifully...like butta!

Avoid Letting Henna Dry
Don't allow any henna to dry up in your applicator bottles or your tips. ANY dried henna in either tips or bottle will definitely give you problems with clogging. If you do let henna dry in your tips or bottles, clean them COMPLETELY.

Mixing Clump-Free Henna
There are some things you can do when mixing your henna to help prevent henna clogs. Add sugar and/or oil to your henna. When you add sugar or oil, watch closely what happens to the texture of your henna. You will see the henna smooth before your very eyes!

Try mixing your henna a little looser or thinner than normal. The thicker your henna the more likely you are to get clogs. Be sure it's still a usable consistency that you enjoy working with.

Use Larger Size Henna Applicator Tips
Finally, you can use a larger applicator tip and still get fine lines. If you use a larger tip, you can control the thickness of your line by adjusting the speed that you draw the line. The faster you go the thinner the line! Try it!

Beaded Wedding Flats for Brides

We just got our new shipment of khussa Indian shoes in. That means my looooong list of brides can get their wedding shoes! Yay!!!!!

Cool white shoes, warm white shoes, and off white/ivory flats are finally here in sizes 6-12. This time we got a nice neutral white for the warm white so it's easy to match with dresses.

Most of our shoes are silk and can be dyed to another color or tinted another shade of white.

Wearing Khussa Shoes For Your Wedding

You don't need, nor really want, a perfect match to your wedding dress. The style is heavily trending towards shoes that are a few shades different or an entirely different color. Think elegant beaded gold flats with an ivory wedding gown or delicate silver flat wedding shoes with a pure white gown.

Remember khussa shoes have no left and right foot when they are new. You custom create your own left and right by breaking them in. Wet your feet, slip on your wedding flats, and wear them around the house for an hour or so. The more you wear them the more comfortable they become.

Henna Tattoo Safety: No Black Henna!

It's summer time and that means henna tattoos! ...at the beach, on vacation, at festivals, everywhere!

Let's talk about henna safety. You may have heard about people with allergic reactions, burns, and/or scars from a henna tattoo. Those are not from pure natural henna. Those misfortunes come from so-called "black henna". Allergies to natural henna are EXTREMELY rare.

Henna is not black!

Do not allow anyone to put henna on you if the stain is going to be black!

The color of natural henna varies and can be a deep burgundy brown, coffee brown, rich maroon-ish, or any shade of orange or brown. The color of your actual henna tattoo will depend on a number of factors including, how fresh the henna is and what it is mixed with, how the skin was prepared before applying the henna, how long the moist henna was in contact with the skin, what part of the body was hennaed, and how the dried henna was removed.

Henna needs to stay on a good while (much longer than an hour) for a deep long lasting stain. The length the stain will stay depends on your body chemistry, how long the henna is left on, if a sealant was used, your body temperature, and how well the henna tattoo is cared for. A typical natural henna tattoo will last 5 days to 3 weeks.

To protect yourself from fake, black "henna" ask your henna artist these questions...

What color will the henna stain be?
If the answer is black or anything other than what is described above, do not allow that substance to be applied to your body and seep into your bloodsteam.
May I see a list of your ingredients?
Check the list for additives you either don't recognize or that you may be allergic to.
How long does the paste need to stay on the skin.
If the answer is less than an hour, there is likely and additive in the henna that shouldn't be there.

There are many real henna artists around. Find a reputable artist that mixes their own henna and get a henna tattoo from them. You will be safe, you will get a better quality henna tattoo, and you will enjoy it more!

New Eyegasms Colors

Susan stopped in the Beachcombers Bazaar store for some restocking. That means we have some exciting new Eyegasms colors to offer!

If you haven't yet heard me rave about Susan's Eyegasms, here's a quick low down. Susan used to use Bare Essentials and MAC mineral pigments for eye shadow. She found that they didn't have a good range of bright fun sparkly colors so she decided to make her own mineral pigment eye shadows using mineral pigments and mica powders. Lucky for all of us! The local belly dancers have been buying from her for years!

Susan's mineral pigment colors are positively inspiring! They are completely pure with no fillers to dilute the color (makes them wonderful for making gilding paste for henna tattoos). She also grinds them down to the finest of particles so they go on beautifully. I don't even use make-up brushes. I just use my fingers to apply the color.

Any way, back to the new colors at hand! This is not a complete list, but some of the highlights.

Fire Opal
We now have it! This super cool color may have replaced Smokey Quartz as my favorite mineral pigment color. I wrote a blog article about it when I first discovered Fire Opal last month. It is a yellow orange at first glance (a color I would never select for myself normally), but when you put it on, it's stunning! There's a hint of green sparkle/sheen with the warm yellowy color for the coolest effect.

Desert Sunset
Is it pink, is it coral? I don't know but it's gorgeous! This color will work beautifully for any skin tone. It's sort of a coral with a pink sheen. Perfect for summer.

Chysocolla
This is bright rich turquoise blue/green though mostly blue. It looks like the chysocolla gemstone. It's very Caribbean-ocean-feeling.

Ocean Tide
OK, so it's not one of her new colors, but it's the PERFECT summer color! It's a neutral taupe kind of color with a turquoise sheen! It's one of the those colors that pairs well with other colors but is perfect when you just want a quick swipe of color and don't want to put any work into it. Kind of like Smokey Quartz.

Golden Gaia
Yes, I know this is not a new color either, but again PERFECT for summer! It's a glorious light green color almost minty, expect it has a slight golden shimmer. The golden shimmer makes all the difference.

3D Wire Sculpture: Orlando Local Art

LaVern David Thompson is the artist behind these fantastic 3D wire sculptures.

This Florida artist uses a unique wire coil toe design that allows the wire itself to create spaces with texture and lines of life and emotion. Each wrap twist, curve, and bend symbolizes that a pull on either end of the wire wherever it may be, would stretch that wire into a lifetime.

The great connection between all of us!

We offer a nice selection of his work for under $25 at our College Park Orlando store! I also have a could of his gorgeous balanced wire mobiles for under $40.

You really have to see these in person to appreciate the artistry! I LOVE local art!

New Bindi Body Stickers

Twenty seven new bindi body stickers are up on the site!

My new favorites? These fantastic bindi with beaded dangles. Too cute! Normally this style bindi is in more solid colors but I love that these have a black background.

Remember, bindi aren't just for the forehead. They can be worn anywhere. These will be great as a delicate floating necklace. I think I may try 3 of them in a little triangle or one paired with a smaller plainer bindi on each side of it.

Woo hoo! GREAT conference! The eCommerce business conference in Vegas was fantastic. Not only was it more information than we can possibly put into practice but it was a ton of fun.

A huge thank you to all the sponsors of the event and to all our customers that accepted our shipping delays!

We were able to connect with other friends in the eCommerce business and I even did some henna on some folks at the conference! Talk about branding your product, right?

This is John of Colder Ice and 3rd Power Outlets. John gave a wonderful presentation on social marketing and got his first henna tattoo!

It's back to business as usual, normal business hours and shipping schedules. We, of course, have a list of to-do items. We hope to improve our efficiency so that we can keep our prices low, and to increase sales so that we can add even bigger variety of our items!

Aneel and Sue's wedding pictures!

Aneel and Sue had a gorgeous multi-cultural wedding. Aneel was kind enough to send pictures that included some of our products.

Aren't they a beautiful couple? Sue is wearing Indian khussa shoes under that stunning gown of hers.

Flat wedding shoes are not an easy find and khussa are perfect.

The bridesmaids all wore black dresses in different styles. Very flattering. The best part was each girl wore a different brightly colored shoe! Such a great idea. Those girls must have been much more comfortable than most bridesmaids.

One girl is wearing glass bangles to match her lovely lime shoes!

How stunning is that sari? I love to see saris in white, and I love the elegant combining of the two cultures. It must have been a stunning ceremony! Notice the traditional glass bangles on Sue? LOVE IT ALL!

How much fun was the Whyne and Mutt Art stroll in college Park on Saturday?

I met some wonderful people, did some henna, exposed a new henna artist to doing henna on others, contributed $40 for a great cause, and am excited about a certain secret belly henna I will be doing in about 7 months!

Susan was here with her mineral pigments - the ENTIRE selection - and I got the coolest new shadow color, EVER! It's called Fire Opal and is a yellow orange at first glance (a color I would never select for myself normally), but when you put it on, it's stunning! There's a hint of green sparkle/sheen with the warm yellowy color for such a cool effect.

Those are some serious khussa Indian shoes! Susan, of Eyegasms Mineral Pigments fame, emailed me this picture of her current Beachcombers khussa collection.

How fun! I love that they are tucked in this little crevice between bookshelves.

One of the coolest things about khussa is they pack nice and tight, so you can pack a million of them when you travel without needing a boatload of space!

Henna vs. Old Man Winter

This time of year I start getting emails from henna artists that are not getting as good of color from their henna as they typically do. Henna can be picky about temperature and winter is a different set of challenges than summer.

In the winter (even here in Florida) we have to be more patient with our henna. The same henna that would obtain full dye release in a few hours can take a full day or more in a cooler environment. I find that if my house is less than 70 degrees I need to let my henna powder mix sit 48 hours or more. I do this in stages. I mix my powder with my liquid (lemon, tea mix, or whatever I am using that day) and let it sit overnight. The next morning I add sugar, essential oils, and any additional liquid if needed. I let that sit again overnight and the next day I put the henna in applicators and cones for freezing. Sometimes I don't freeze the cones until the next day, giving the henna a full 3 days to sit.

The first Wednesday of every month, Dechoes, the local trendy clothing resale shop hosts Wine Not Wednesdays. For February it was combined with a benefit for disaster relief in Haiti. I did henna tattoo and there was a silent auction.

We raised nearly $1000 for relief! Yea!

Henna for Haiti a Big Success!

Saturday we put out the word, that we would be doing henna tattoos in our Orlando store with all proceeds going to the Red Cross to help with disaster relief in Haiti.

We raised $130 and then we matched the donations for a total of $260! Thanks for helping Orlando!

There are traditional Indian bindi styles and exciting new modern bindi designs.

These dark red bindi have the coolest iridescent gold accents. They must be seen in person to really appreciate.
I LOVE the shape of these bindi. I'm also a big fan of fun bright colors, so these scream my name.Gorgeous! Pure white pearls are accented with bright jewel-tones micro beads. I'd totally wear them in groups. They would also be so cute in the hair.
Remember, bindi are all about making them your own. Get creative with them! Do something unusual! Have FUN!

A huge congratulations to one of my best friends, Carrie, and her new husband Dave!

I was honored to be a part of their wedding, and I had more fun that I ever thought I could being part of the wedding.

I did wedding henna on Carrie and her sister, Courtney.
I provided comfy khussa shoes for the bridesmaids to wear during the reception.
I wore the dress and did the bridesmaids duties.

BUT...the most fun was participating in the big hoax on the mother-of-the-bride.

Upon Carrie's request, I dyed my hair bright grinch-green for the rehearsal dinner and pretended that my hair would be green the next day during the wedding. Everyone was in on it! People pretended to get excited and asked me if I'd put green streaks in their hair too. After a couple of hours, Father David made a speech. In the speech he announced the hoax and that my hair would be a very appropriate black for the wedding the next day.

Carrie's poor mother, said "You can't trust anyone anymore! Even my priest was in on it!"

He he! Yea for FUN brides!

What a FUN workshop! A HUGE thank you to Brenda for hosting this great demo/class on her Create-Your-Own Bajidoo Bangle kits. The end results were FANTASTIC!

Yes! We will have another, but we will structure it differently. It will be more like a henna class where you will have to RSVP for a seat. Instead of working form a specific kit, all the art and decoration will be a la carte to give you more flexibility!

WOW! What a GREAT Saturday!

The workshop lead by Brenda for the DIY bangle kits was positively awesome! It was the first one so we learned much to make the next one even better! More pictures will be posted tomorrow.

Florida Tribal Dance is always a treat to watch! Silver Sage, the student troop preformed. It's tough to believe they are students, because they are AWESOME! If you have not taken Lacey's classes, you really need to give it a try. Check out her website for class times and find a beginning dance class that fits in your schedule. Try just one class and you will be hooked! All ages, styles, body-types, and experience are welcome. Don't want to go alone? Bring a friend or shoot me an email. I'll be happy to go to a beginning class with you!

Laura performed a solo after the Silver Sage performance. She is incredible! The control! The technique! The stage presence! Whenever I see Laura perform it reminds me of what fantastic performers they are for parties. Hire them for a holiday party and your guests won't stop talking about it until you have them back again!

Mary and Tammy of Yip Podcast performed some improve tribal style and pulled out some new moves I hadn't seen before! Super cool! Nina and Erika joined them for a second dance.

Around 9:00 thing started winding down as people pulled up a blanket and folding chair to enjoy a free screening of Tamalyn Dallal's documentary "40 Days 1001 Nights". Sposored by Yip Podcast, Mary got permission form Tamalyn to show her film. It's a peek into everyday life in the Islamic world and it's really a must see.

A HUGE thank you to everyone that made this event such a success!

I hope to make these events a regular occurrence! Stay tuned for details on the next one!

New Glass Bangles on the website!

The store has been keeping me busy, and I apologize for taking so long to get some new glass bangle sets up for purchase. That mistake has been corrected!

I have 20 new bangle sets up for size 2.6 Small and size 2.10 M/L. I have fewer for size 2.12 XL, but I have more working!

There are some exciting new sets up using the fancy wedding style bangles in bold fun colors.

I love this Indian bangle set with a trendy combination of pink, silver, and brown.

Turquoise blue and lime glass bangles have been a huge hit lately. I've added some golds in this set to give it a fun fall look.
